A week late, but still worthy of a journal:

My college life is over. I have graduated from the University of the Philippines with a degree in BS Mathematics! Fortunately, I'm not "unemployed"… but I'm not working… yet. I'm going with UP Iris to Cambodia for one last hurrah before work.

Here's a photo of the sunset over my college graduation at the Science Oval:

I entered the University of the Philippines with a camera… and I left it with the camera.

Philippines
A self-taught photographer since 2003, I've held key positions in various student publications from grade school all the way until college and have even been published by the Philippine Daily Inquirer. In 2012, I graduated from the University of the Philippines with a degree in BS Mathematics.

Although I grew up in events documentation and journalism, my true passion is in landscape and nature photography. Nonetheless, I can do portrait photography if needed.

My belief is that a photographer only reaches his full potential when he can take stunning edit free photographs on any camera - even from cellphones.

Hi Mr. Joseph Cheng, you randomly came up to me and showed me your lunar eclipse photos in the middle of UPD's recent Lantern Parade. I was really pleased but I was too shy do anything else but smile :) so I asked my friend about you and he showed me your DA and I'm loving it :D

Oh wow... you do good research!

It's not of the lunar eclipse, just an old photo of the moon: [link]

Well it's not everyday that someone recognizes great photography either! :XD:

It's my default answer/photo when people ask me how far my zoom lens can go.

Hey Joseph!

it's been a while but I'm actually finally getting a new lens this week... THIS WEEK!! yes. My my, I was wondering if 30mm f/2.8 macro lens would be good to use as a prime lens? I will essentially want a lens for portraits/ family photos, landscapes, etc. Would this lens be nice for it or would it be too much macro. I heard it was a pretty nice lens.

Pero honestly, the working distance on the 30mm macro is too short. To get a full 1:1 macro shot, you need to be 0.75 inches between the lens and the object, this can block the available light making macro shots hard to do. (I know cause I have one: [link] [link] [link] [link] [link] )

If you do get it, you'll just end up wanting to get a 100mm Macro lens in the future (like me) which gives you 6.2 inches instead of 0.75! Hahaha

So if you really really need the macro now and can live with the 'difficulty', get it. If you can live without true 1:1 macro, get the 35mm F/1.8 instead - you'll have more fun with DOF :D

Tip: Do not get both. Better to get the 35mm F/1.8 now then save up on a 100mm F/2.8 macro 2 years down the road. By that time, they should have a newer macro (which is what I'm waiting for) and the price of the current 100mm F/2.8 macro will drop by 30%.

Ahh, okay I see what your saying. And no, I'm not buying to purchase a macro. I think I'll search for a good wide-angle lens and/or some where I can have fun in DOF ^^.
About that, any suggestions?

Simply for the macro feature, yes. It will give you the same field of view as the famous 50mm does on a full frame camera (30×1.5=45mm).

But if you need the shallower depth of field and wider aperture for night/party shots, I'd recommend the 35mm F/1.8 instead... but it's not that good for macro.

Don't count on doing the "reverse lens" technique. It's much harder on all Sony and Nikon lenses.
